After the excellent animated adaptation of Room On The Broom (produced by the excellent Magic Light Pictures) aired on BBC1 over Christmas 2012, it is worth taking a look back at the original book (since I have been reading it to my daughter every night for a bout the past month). And, given that this year is the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the collaboration of children’s author, Julia Donaldson, and illustrator, Axel Scheffler that makes any glimpse a timely one at that.

The animation did take some liberties with the original story, albeit necessary ones for a 30 minute long film – for example, more humour is generated in the animation through the character of the witch’s cat, who communicates more with the arch of an eyebrow or shake of the head than is possible with an illustration. Gratifying entertainment though the film is, the original text is where the genius shines through.

The book, like most other works by Donaldson & Scheffler, is a very enjoyable read for the parent & child alike. It is, quite possibly, one of the best that this creative partnership have produced, possessing fantastical adventure (A Witch! A Dragon!), humour, energy, and linguistic gymnastics aplenty. The tale twists and turns and the generous character of the witch is kindly repaid when the wandering stray animals (dog, bird, frog…) combine, like a mud-spawned Transformer, to save her from said dragon. Whilst no moralising is necessary, the gently infused message of kindness repays kindness is, of course, a very pleasing one.
